Looking back is something inherent in our lives. At many points in time it is important to board the train of the future in order not to become petrified like a pillar of salt, as the prophet said. On other occasions however, looking back and dwelling on the past can give us revealing insights that can contribute to our present.

Lace, embroidery, needlework and household ornaments created by women form part of that anthropological heritage — a heritage woven into the very fabric of marriage and domestic life — which once adorned the home and wove together the social bonds within it. The ways in which these textiles were used shaped and established patterns of behaviour characteristic of their time. Fabrics that entailed hours of reveries, of hoping and dreaming, of waiting, of concern or serenity. Anonymous works of needlecraft, intricately woven into whimsical, exuberant and tenacious creations. Works made of countless present moments, destined to be revealed later in intimacy. Many of these creations could only be seen in the intimate, private space of bedrooms, where the softness of their forms and their intricate workings opened up a world of infinite sensory pleasures. The softness of silk, the crispness of a starched garment, the pleasing flowery shapes of delicate lace and embroidery, the scent of a hot iron meeting the fabric …

This reconsideration of those silent, dare I call them, works of art, is a contrast to our world of soulless machines and endless rushing. Perhaps it also alerts us to another side of feminine silence, apparently static, quietness in another light, and invites us to reflect on the underlying values of such sublime and meticulous work.

The project emerged from a process of research into the materials and creations associated with a craft traditionally practised by women: embroidery. We set out to explore the artistic possibilities of an activity long regarded as a minor or decorative art, or simply as a craft, which, for centuries and across different cultures, has served as both a refuge and an outlet for women’s creativity, while other forms of “Art” remained largely inaccessible to them.

To this end, the project seeks to decontextualise and recontextualise the materials, forms and functions that have shaped this tradition, offering a new perspective through which their artistic value can be recognised.
